An extremely challenging triangular corner site at the intersection of the main road and a secondary road, with high tension wires at arms reach from 1st floor height. Ergo the need to have a sheltered façade on the main road frontage preventing any mishaps, yet have openings for ventilation.

An extremely challenging project with a site level difference of 10ft from front to rear. Rear being lower as the site lies in a hilly terrain region in Mahalakshmi layout. The site also has a sand filling of 40’ from nearly half a century ago and 2 coconut trees on either front corner of property deflecting majorly in different directions much into the property boundary.

Different kinds of footings were designed to stabilize the structure. The trees were retained and the house was built around it. A stilt floor has been designed for parking and the house is a duplex with an additional floor for rental income

A house with the circular entrance porch is influenced by the Thinnai of a traditional Kerala home which serves a s a reception with a small granite ledge for seating and doubles up as a community space.

A curved front sit-out (Chuttu) opens up into a small water body and garden influenced by the courtyard concept of traditional Kerala homes. The balcony is covered with tiled roof and supported over wooden purlins and rafters along with wooden railings and detailing. The façade also has large windows in solid wood.

The stairway area is of stone with terracotta jali bricks. The use of materials is typical of the style keeping in mind the climate of the south

A house that spans across an entire floor comprising of 3 different units purchased over a decade and unified into 1 whole over the same period of time. It is designed for 3 generations who use the space, namely the owners from two different cultures with the ‘Uncal’ (traditional swing) and a broken tile mural depicting rural Bengal along with their metropolitan kids and parents wishing to hold on to certain traditional beliefs.

The richness of wood and veneer juxtaposed by the contrast of ocean blue flooring and with an upturned boat in one part of the ceiling binds the 2 cultures through one common connect of sharing the coastline of the Bay of Bengal and Coromandel Coast

The home is designed to blend in sensibilities of an art lovers delight and a coffee/tea connoisseurs den with suitable music keeping spirits high for the residents and their friends.
